Kat Robichaud beguiles, delights, and mesmerizes her audience with her dynamic voice, original song compositions, and keen wit. This dynamic woman is destined for big shows around the country. Remember, you heard it right here, from Greg Autry, FIRST !

I saw Kat Robichaud’s Misfit Cabaret, a fairytale themed theatrical variety show, at Z Space in San Francisco recently, and was absolutely `Be-Dazzled.’ Kat Robichaud writes all of the shows, collaborating on an idea for the theme with co-producer Jordan Nathan. Inspiration coming from movies and music that she loved growing up, with new pop-culture references mixed in.

Grimm was written at the request of Jordan, who is an enormous fairytale and Disney fan. Kat told me that most of her personal inspiration comes from the darker fantasy films from the 80’s, like Legend, and Labyrinth, and The Never-Ending Story. She remarked that, `The 80’s really liked to push the boundaries of what was considered acceptable for children to watch.’ And somehow, she is very drawn by that.

Misfit Cabaret is exciting and fun simply because you never know what you’ll get. The shows are a compilation of acts, stories, and songs, all emceed by Robichaud. Typically showcasing, circus style aerialist, drag, burlesque, and a musical guest, in addition to Kat’s band, `The Darling Misfits’ who play throughout the show. Robichaud herself appears as different characters and the show always ends with Kat, the Darling Misfit’s and all the performers on stage, inviting all in the audience to come and dance, and party, on stage! It was raucous and mind blowing.

The next shows for Misfit Cabaret are scheduled for Seattle from May 17th – 26th  at Hale’s Palladium. Cinephilia, the cult film themed show is to be performed. I’m told it’s a combination Clockwork Orange, The Shining, Hedwig, Blazing Saddles, Edward Scissorhands, all combined. It will be ridiculous and fun.

Each Misfit Cabaret is themed and so far, Ms. Robichaud has written 8 original shows. There is a `Broadway’ themed show, a naughty `Nautical’ themed show called “Whimsea,”, two `Halloween’ shows, a `Christmas/ Holiday’ show, an `Oscar Wilde Paris’ show, a `Movie’ themed show called “Cinepheilia,” and the fairytale themed show that I saw at Z Space, `Grimm.’

When I visited her backstage before the show she was working diligently on getting her “wings” to work, Kat told me that the next Misfit Cabaret that she plans on writing will be sci-fi themed.

With Robichaud as the nights emcee and chanteuse, The Darling Misfits provide the continuity of the traveling band, performing at all the shows and bringing the crazy along. The music is magic with a cast of performers that range from the splendorous to the cheeky. Every show is excitingly different.

Grimm, opened with the special medley of Misfit Cabaret theme songs to kick off the evening. Then Johnny Rockitt performed a “devilish” drag performance, topped off with a serenade by special songbird `Unwoman,’ cellist Erica Mulkey, playing an electric cello with a very low F string.

Aerialist dragon Eka Boo Button soared high onto the stage with ropes and twists and twirls, and laughter abounded as the puppets of Shadow Circus Creature Theater tickle your funny bone! Though I admit I had to listen to the laughter only, as the lighting was off and I actually couldn’t see the puppets themselves. Oh Well, Live performance, it happens.

The night that  I saw Grimm, Kat offered up a “naughty treat” from a veiled cage, San Francisco’s Burlesque Blackbird, the bodacious Bo Vixxen.

There was an audible gasp from the crowd when the voluptuous blond emerged, barely clad in lacy black and saved from almost being nude by her shimmering black feathered fans.  I heard a lady near me proclaim aloud, “Oh Myy Gawd,” so taken by Bo’s glamorous beauty.

Local performers are hired in each city to provide opportunities for local artists, as well as to demonstrate how amazing the local art scene is. Robichaud engages in constant repartee and stories with her audience. On this night, sold out of course, she demonstrated her engaging sharp wit, combined with storytelling. She told one story about her song CRIMINAL, based on the serial killer Dr. H.H. Holmes. I recognized the story that inspired Robichaud to write the song from the book `The Devil in the White City’ by Erik Larson.

Robichaud was a top 10 finalist on The Voice and her incredible vocals nail the emotion of her lyrics, combined with power that sounds as though she is a one-woman, arena-sized rock opera that would make great rock bands such as Queen and Heart, proud indeed.  I invite you to come spend an enchanted fairytale evening with a tour de force of talent at San Francisco’s wildest variety show!

Cast of Performers include: The Darling Misfits- Brendan Getzell (keys), RJ Pal (drums), Adam Dragland (guitar), Tim Baker (bass.) The cast of Grimm – Johnny Rockitt (Darkness from Legend), Eka.Boo.Button (aerialist/ Falkor The Luck Dragon), Shadow Circus Creature Theater (puppets, Dave Haaz-Baroque and Charlie Gray), Unwoman (Erica Mulkey, cellist), and Bo Vixxen (burlesque blackbird.)

New Misfit Cabaret shows for San Francisco are to be announced along with shows coming to Los Angeles and Portland, as well. Discussions for Reno, and Vancouver are pending at this time. I will follow-up with updates for the new Tour as they become available.

Misfit Cabaret is a splendorous variety show centered on magical music with a rotating cast of eccentric performers. You never know what you’re going to see, or what you’re getting yourself into!

For each new Misfit Cabaret, emcee Kat Robichaud writes two original songs keeping with the theme of the evening and plays them with her Darling Misfit band, as well as a special medley to kick off the evening and welcome in the spirits of San Francisco’s saucy past. There’s comedy, romance, and bawdiness around every corner and not a dull moment or dry eye in the house. This is a Show not to be missed in its entire glorious live splendor.
